Monsoon Musing

That little puff of cloud eventually became a thunderstorm. We even got a brief sprinkling at the house, enough to cool the air a little. It looks promising for the next week. Promising meaning the North American monsoon should deliver some real accumulation.

It's been hot in Flagstaff by our standards. Over 90 Fahrenheit. This is normally fine with me, and I spent almost a quarter century in Tennessee and Georgia. But the air conditioning is malfunctioning, and even in the Southeastern US life somewhat depends on AC. I'm getting it looked at but for now it's fans between about 10 am and sunset. Cry for me.

We are interviewing for a couple of open positions at work. I hate interviewing other people almost as much as I hate being interviewed. It's a small team and I have a little anxiety to not hire someone with a monstrous personality. There are plenty of them in infotech.

It may sound strange to worry more about personality or work style than getting someone with qualifications, but to me most of the job can be done by anyone with above average intelligence. We aren't developing software from scratch and most of the job is not actually writing code. Workflows, configuring applications, troubleshooting scenarios with data, attending meetings, and building translation tables dominate for our team.

I write code, but it's less than half of my time. Probably much less than half. For the most part, I can tell just from the resume whether or not a candidate will be able to code, but it's the other stuff that's an unknown.
