Like so many of the mountains in Northern Arizona, Slate Mountain got partially burned over in recent years. I can't remember the cause but most of the fires around here are started by humans. It's amazing we have any mountains left with forest on them.

The Slate Mountain Trail is one of my favorites. I still like it despite the burn damage. For a summit trail it's relatively smooth and easy and provides great views of most of the San Francisco Peaks mountain range and the north rim of the Grand Canyon in the distance.
